Vietnam first civilization arose in the Red River valley some 5000 years ago. In 111 bc Nam Viet became part of Chinese empire. By the mid 1500s, Dai Viet was divided between rival kingdoms. The Trinh in the north and the Nguyen in the south. In 1802, a Nguyen lord, with the help of the French, defeated the Trinh and renamed the country Vietnam. By 1890, however, France had taken over Vietnam.

After Japan’s defeat in 1945, Ho Chi Minh, the leader of Communist party, declared Vietnam an independent nation. Between 1975 and 1980, Vietnam traded mainly with other communist countries. A President, chosen by Assembly, is the head of the state and commander of the armed forces. As a communist country, Vietnam has no official religion. But people are free to worship if they want to, and many follow what’s called the “Three Teachings” of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.

Vietnam war:

In 1961 American military adviserswere arrived in Vietnam. In September of 1963, President John F. Kennedy declared in an interview, "In the final analysis, it is their war. They are the ones who have to win it or lose it. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. The only thing certain about Kennedy's role in Vietnam before he died was that he had escalated America's military, political, and maybe psychological commitment to Vietnam.

President Lyndon B. Johnson took the role in Vietnam war. Simultaneously, he escalated the American involvement in the Vietnam War from 16,000 American soldiers in 1963 to 550,000 in early 1968. He said, "If we allow Vietnam to fall, tomorrow we’ll be fighting in Hawaii, and next week in San Francisco," this is why he was so committed to the war.

President Eisenhower administration was concerned that if Vietnam fell under Communist control, other Southeast Asian and Pacific nations, including even the Philippines, would fall one by one. In response to that threat, the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) was formed in 1955 to prevent Communist expansion.

What is your proudest personal?
I am very proud of my accomplishments in being a professional singer, I have my own CD out in Vietnam, titled, "Thuy Lam.”
Finishing my second year at the Culture and Performing Arts school in Ho Chi Minh. I am the first representative of Vietnam in the Miss Universe pageant.
What is something unique that has happened to you; some interesting thing about you?
I have starred in three Vietnamese films within the last two years.
What do you want the judges to know about you?
I admire my mother very much and because of my admiration for her, I wanted to enter this pageant, not for the competition, but to represent Vietnam and let the world know about our culture, our people and especially the Vietnamese woman. We can carry out our traditional roles as good mothers and wives and can still perform on a professional level.
